Hope Kminek, LMSW
My name is Hope, and I see therapy as a journey we take together, where my role is to join with you in exploring your experiences.
The idea of healing can be intimidating. You may wonder what that actually means, if it’s possible, or if what you’re carrying is worth healing. It requires us to bravely turn back toward connection, often the very thing that caused the hurt. I believe we all possess the resiliency to do this.
My identity as a transnational adoptee shapes how I approach therapy. I’m familiar with the questions and complexities that come with understanding who you are, especially when it means separating yourself from the roles you were expected to play (e.g., the achiever, the perfectionist, the child without problems). Identity may not feel like a reason to seek therapy, and many of us don’t realize we’re still playing those same roles that no longer serve us. I enjoy creating a compassionate space for these discoveries to happen.
In our work together, we’ll unpack the messages and expectations you carry about yourself and where they came from. From there, we’ll find what resonates with who you want to be and how to get there. Because this process can stir up difficult feelings, developing self-compassion is woven in throughout the journey. I primarily draw on skills from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), however my approach is adapted to meet your needs and goals.
Being vulnerable isn't easy. I aim to make therapy feel inviting and authentic. Comfort matters, so dim lighting, a blanket, kicking your shoes off are all welcome here. My aim is to make therapy feel approachable rather than intimidating. This means sessions with me will be relaxed, patient, and non judgemental. I will walk alongside you, honoring your pace and your comfort level. Everyone deserves a place where they feel truly heard and understood. My hope is to offer that space not only for navigating challenges, but also for celebrating growth and moments of joy.
