Whitney Lang Iowa City Therapist

Maybe you’re the person everyone thinks has it together. You show up. You handle your responsibilities. You take care of other people. You work hard, keep moving, and somehow manage to make it look easy. But underneath all of that, you may be exhausted, disconnected, or wondering who you are when you aren't being productive, needed, or strong for someone else.

Maybe you learned early that being vulnerable wasn't safe, that your feelings were something to manage rather than understand, or that your worth was tied to what you could provide. Maybe those lessons helped you survive then, but are creating distance in your relationships now. You want to feel more connected—to yourself, to other people, and to a life that isn't built entirely around survival.

I work with people 13 and older from all walks of life, with a special interest in Black men, adolescents, and BIPOC clients navigating trauma, attachment wounds, ADHD, perfectionism, burnout, self-worth, and relationship challenges. I also work with parents who are trying to understand a teenager who has been labeled “difficult,” “defiant,” or “angry,” when they may actually be struggling to regulate emotions they don't have the words to express just yet.

At the heart of my work is the belief that your story matters. Your experiences, relationships, and the ways you learned to protect yourself have shaped you, but they don't have to define what comes next. I don't believe therapy is about me telling you who to be or what to do. You are the expert on your own life. My role is to walk alongside you, help you understand yourself with more compassion, and support you as you figure out what healing and a life that feels like yours can look like.

You don't have to know exactly what's wrong before you come to therapy. You don't have to have the right words, and you don't have to arrive already knowing how to heal. We can start wherever you are.

I am a culturally responsive, identity-affirming therapist. I’m a Black woman, a mother, a first-generation college student,  former collegiate athlete and coach, and the Co-Founder of the BIPOC Healing Collective. These parts of my identity shape how I show up in the therapy room, with empathy, directness, and an understanding of what it means to carry both visible and invisible weight in spaces not designed for us.

Because I know what it’s like. I’ve lived the tension of being “high achieving” while silently struggling. I’ve felt the isolation, the high expectations, the code-switching, and the exhaustion of constantly pushing through. I do this work because no one should have to carry all of that alone. I’m here to walk with you as you unlearn survival mode and reconnect with what’s true, possible, and healing.

Healing doesn’t happen in isolation, it happens in community, in relationship, and when we’re allowed to show up fully as ourselves. I believe you don’t have to be “fixed” to be worthy of care. Healing is not linear, and it doesn’t require perfection. It begins when we feel seen, heard, and safe enough to lay down what we’ve been carrying.

I meet clients where they are, with honesty, curiosity, and compassion. My approach is warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed. I draw from evidence-based practices like Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and I work to center your voice, your values, and your lived experience. Together, we’ll focus on empowerment, autonomy, or whatever it is that you need to build a life that feels more aligned and sustainable.
